Italian President Sergio Mattarella will meet with the International Monetary Fund's former director Carlo Cottarelli for talks on Monday. This suggests the president may ask Cottarelli to form a technocrat government. On Sunday, Mattarella destroyed chances of forming a coalition government -- supported by the anti-establishment party 5-Star Movement and far-right party League -- by rejecting their choice for economy minister. Italian prime minister-designate Giuseppe Conte has given up his mandate to form a government. Most political parties say they wouldn't back a technocrat government. They would push for early elections in the autumn if a coalition administration isn't formed.
